Attending a wedding this summer - save on travel costs

Now that wedding season is upon us, a recent survey by Railcard has revealed that wedding guests spend on average a whopping £402.90 on each wedding they attend. With 31% of Brits having attended between one and three weddings in the past two years, these sometimes-overlooked expenses can quickly rack up.

In fact, 59% of those surveyed admit that they would decline a wedding invitation if the costs of attending were too high, showing that cost-savings to any wedding expense can really make the difference for those who RSVP 'Yes' or a regretful 'No'.

On average, wedding attendees spend the following on each wedding they attend:
£84.40 on accommodation
£83.30 on clothes
£79.60 on gifts
£68 on travel
£50 on drinks
£37.60 on food and snacks

Regardless of their relationship to the couple getting married, Brits are willing to travel the distance to be there on the special day, with 1 in 5 stating that they would travel up to two hours for the wedding of a person they have never even met. In fact, on average, Brits have travelled up to just under five hours for their longest trip to make it to the big day, and say they would travel just over nine hours for the wedding of a family member. These long journeys put travel costs at £68 per person on average per wedding they attend, according to the research commissioned by railcard.co.uk.

However, whether travelling solo this wedding season, as Two Together or with Family & Friends, at an annual cost of £30 (Disabled Persons Railcard is £20), a Railcard can be purchased online to save an average of £140 per year and will have paid for itself in just one or two trips.

With 63% of Brits travelling to weddings with a partner, the Two Together Railcard can see more savings for those choosing to take the train, and for the 47% who are travelling with children, the Family & Friends Railcard is a great option, saving travellers a third on their rail fares, and up to 60% off for kids aged 5-15. Say hello to discounted tickets that will leave you with more money in your pocket. Imagine what you could do with those extra pounds – upgrade your accommodation, indulge in a few extra cocktails at the reception, or treat the couple to a special gift. The choice is yours!
